Day 4 of the JOGLE (John O'Groats to Lands End) started with a bit of a hiccup. I was feeling optimistic about a new route, eager to explore a disused railway track that I thought would be an alternative to the coastal path. But my hopes were quickly dashed. A short way into the path I was met with a padlocked gate, barbed wire, and no way forward.
So I thought of Plan B: the coastal path again. However it came with its own challenges – lots of ascent and some pretty strong winds. So I decided to go for Plan C: road walking. I’m not usually a fan of the tarmac, but in this case it seemed like the best option given the conditions and the length of the day ahead.
The road walking isn’t the most exciting. I’d much prefer a path with varied terrain and scenery. But there was an upside - I passed through several villages and I was able to stop off at the Portland Hotel in Lybster for coffee. What started as a quick caffeine break turned into an unexpected treat – a gluten-free cheese and ham toastie! Not exactly what I planned, but it definitely hit the spot.

The rest of the day was more of the same: long stretches of road with not much to break the monotony. Still, I was making good progress, and by early afternoon, I reached the campsite. It’s a good stopover with all the amenities, including a shower and toilet block.
Not many photos today but Adam did manage to capture a short video at the start as I figured out the new route. Tomorrow’s plan? More road walking. The coastal path is tempting, but it comes with a serious challenge: 3,000 feet of ascent and with the windy weather and the goal of making it to Lands End, I’ve decided to keep to the road. Hopefully tomorrow will be a bit more scenic and exciting – but if not, I’ll take it in my stride. After all, the real goal is to reach Land’s End, and nothing is going to stop me from getting there!
