Day 3: Wick to Whaligoe

Distance: 11.52miles (18.54 km)

Weather: Bright and sunny with a chilly breeze.

Start Time: 09:58

Finish time: 16.30

The day started with a small challenge: finding my way out of Wick. It may sound simple, but navigating the twists and turns of the town was a little trickier than expected. However, once I escaped the hustle and bustle, I found myself in the open countryside, breathing in the fresh air. It wasn’t long before I was heading towards Old Wick Castle.

The castle—though now in total ruins—is a striking reminder of times long past. After exploring the castle, I walked along the cliff footpath, reminiscent of Day 1, with paths weaving around the cliff edges. The rugged terrain certainly challenges the legs, but it’s quiet and peaceful, with my only constant companion being the song of the birds.

Today, I ran into the lovely couple I met on Day 1—not once, but twice! They’re doing the walk in stages, treating each day as a circular day hike. They’ve also been kind enough to donate to Alzheimer’s Research UK via this site. Later on, I met another couple from Cumbria who have also made a donation. Then finally, last night, a fellow camper made a donation as well. The generosity I’ve encountered along the way has been truly humbling. Whether it’s a kind word or a financial contribution, every bit helps support this important charity.

Tonight, we’ve found a peaceful layby next to a lovely, small loch, which is perfect for winding down after a hard day’s walk. The only downside? There’s no electric hook-up and, sadly, no internet connection. So apologies for the delayed blog post, but sometimes it’s also nice to disconnect and enjoy the moment.

Now, it’s time to prepare for tomorrow….
