Day 34: Tow Ford to Byrness
📍Distance: 10.5 miles / 16.9 km
🌤️Weather: Dry, with sunny intervals; windy and chilly
🕥 Start: 10:26 AM | 🕒 Finish: 3:30 PM
Today marked a significant moment on the JoGLE journey – I crossed from Scotland into England!
Jacky and I were driven back to Tow Ford from the campsite this morning by Adam, who you may have noticed has become something of a roving videographer as well as support crew.
We climbed up through the hills, following Dere Street – the Roman road we walked yesterday – to join the Pennine Way. The going was mostly easy, over open moorland under a clear sky, but with a strong chilly wind. One stretch did raise the heart rate a bit: a narrow path with a steep drop to one side. Not my favourite terrain, but it was over quite quickly.
At 11:30 a.m. we officially crossed the border into England. After weeks in Scotland, this was the start of another chapter in my journey.
From there the route took us past the site of a Roman fort and the remains of a medieval village – reminders of the history in the rugged and wild landscape. The final section of the day was a long descent through a felled forest, beginning with a particularly tricky rocky path that tested both our footing and patience.
At the bottom, as always, Adam was there to greet us – camera in hand and, even better, a hot cup of tea waiting.
From today I'm officially on the Pennine Way for the next two weeks and I’m looking forward to what lies ahead.
