Today (Monday 30 June) marks the final day of a journey that began over three months ago. Day 91 of this long walk from John O’Groats to Land’s End—JoGLE—was always going to be special, but I don’t think any of us were quite prepared for just how emotional it would be.
We spent last night in Penzance, staying at the YHA hostel. That afternoon we met up with Jacky and Nathan, two incredible people who’ve been on their own version of this journey, wild camping most of the way and carrying everything they needed on their backs. I have nothing but admiration for their endurance and spirit.
In the evening I was joined by Jacky, Nathan and my friends Kay, Jenny, David, and Nathan’s father George at the Lugger Inn in Penzance. Coincidentally, it turned out to be festival time in town—the Lugger was alive with music, dancing, and celebration. After spending three months in relative solitude, the sudden energy of the festivities came as something of a culture shock—but it was a joyful one, and we enjoyed every moment.
We headed back early to prepare for what we knew would be an unforgettable day.
The Last Walk
Bright and early, I met up again with Jacky and Nathan. After our traditional video, we set off on the final leg of our journey: 12 miles to Land’s End.
The route was gentle, mostly along country lanes, with some passable footpaths. Off in the distance, the lighthouse beyond Land’s End came into view—a small dot marking the end of 1,250 miles of walking.
As we drew nearer, emotions rose. No matter how close we got, it still felt like the finish line was forever just out of reach.
Then we rounded a corner, and there he was—Adam, appearing from behind a hedge in his signature orange Alzheimers Research UK T-shirt, camera ready. And beyond him, a sea of orange shirts: our friends, waiting to welcome us across the finish line.
There were cheers, laughter, hugs, corks popping, and photo after photo. It was everything we could have hoped for—and more.
More Than Just a Walk
Reflecting on this incredible journey, the real highlight has been the people: those we've met along the way, those who’ve opened their hearts and homes, and those who’ve supported us from afar.
This walk has always been about raising awareness and support for Alzheimer’s Research UK and dementia. I’m deeply grateful—and humbled—that we’ve raised around £26,000 so far. Every pound will go towards the vital work of Alzheimer’s Research UK in the hope that one day, no family has to face this disease.
One Last Thank You
Tonight, we’re staying at the Old Success Inn in Sennen Cove, who have generously contributed to our celebration this evening. Their kindness—like so many others along the way—has meant so much to me.
But this journey has never been about me. It’s about those suffering now, and those who will suffer in the future—until we change the ending.
So now, with a full heart and tired feet, I sign off this blog for the final time.
Thank you. To everyone who donated, who read, who commented, who believed in this cause—you’ve walked with me every step of the way.
With deepest gratitude,
David
