Day 49: Hollingworth Lake Campsite to Greenfield
📍 Distance: 13.00 miles (20.92 km)
🌤️ Weather: Overcast with sunny spells
🕘 Start Time: 09:18 | 🕒 Finish Time: 15:30
Today’s walk took me from Hollingworth Lake to Greenfield, with a route that offered both challenges and charm—though not always in the conventional scenic sense.
I started the day with a tough uphill stretch, crossing high grazing lands toward Denshaw. The views were of mostly distant scattered towns and villages
Once I reached Denshaw, I treated myself to lunch at the Junction Hotel—a welcome pause before continuing on to the Tame Valley Way where the landscape began to shift.
At New Barn, a small hamlet made up of beautifully converted mill buildings, I had a chance meeting with James Gregory, who shared a bit of local history. Most of the buildings dated back to the early 18th century, originally built to house workers—and the mill owner—of woollen mill nearby.
From there, I continued through Delph and Uppermill, eventually joining the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. I walked the the towpath the rest of the way to Greenfield, weaving through a patchwork of rural calm and urban bustle.
It wasn’t the most dramatic day of the walk, but it held its own with varied scenery, good conversation, and the satisfcation of moving steadily south.
Tomorrow is a much longer day to Hayfield, followed by a rest day.
