Day 11: Beauly to Abriachan

Distance: 9.42 miles (15.16 km)

Start Time: 09:03

Finish Time: 12:15

Weather: Cloudy and overcast morning, sunny by lunchtime

Today was a shorter walking day.

Having gained a day going straight to Beauly, and after yesterday’s 19 miles from Evanton to Beauly, I decided to break the planned 20-miler from Beauly to Drumnadrochit into two more manageable halves.

The entire route today was on roadways, winding through quiet country lanes. There’s no doubt now I’m in the Highlands. The landscape made sure of that with a steep three-mile climb, but the reward was the stillness of forest, and a sense of crossing into a wilder, more remote part of the country.

Eventually, the route led me to the junction with the Great Glen Way. It’s a bit of a milestone moment – joining this trail feels like the start of a new chapter in the journey.

Adam met me in a car park just off the trail, and we headed back to base in Beauly for a relaxed afternoon.

Tomorrow we’ll drive back to the forest car park, and I’ll rejoin the Great Glen Way, walking to Drumnadrochit.
