Day 81: Barnstaple to Roborough
📏 Distance: 15.90 miles (25.59 km)
☀️ Weather: Hot all day, with a rogue shower in the morning
⏰ Start Time: 08:25 | Finish Time: 15:15
Another early start from the campsite today, and the first task was to head into Barnstaple to pick up some ferrules for my walking poles. On the way, I passed through an area known as Pilton where I came across a lovely row of community cottages.
After sorting the poles, I took the opportunity to treat myself to a coffee at a café before continuing the walking. Navigating out of town meant a bit of traffic dodging, but soon enough I was back on track.
From there, I made my way to Tawstock, passing Tawstock Castle along the way—a rather striking sight. In the village, I visited a spot called Holywell, which is reputed to have the largest well in the country. It once supplied water to the local school.
Later, I came across a particularly low bridge—only 6’6” high. Safe to say, the motorhome wouldn’t have made it through that one!
The rest of the day brought more of the same: deep valleys and long, steady climbs. I hadn’t realised quite how hilly Devon is—it’s a proper rollercoaster. But the views are rewarding, and the peaceful countryside more than makes up for the legwork.
Tomorrow promises to be another day of ups and downs—literally. But that’s how the cookie crumbles on this adventure.
