Day 53: Monyash to Tissington
📍 Distance: 15.14 miles (24.37 km)
⛅ Weather: Overcast with sunny spells and warm
🕤 Start Time: 09:20 | 🕒 Finish Time: 15:15
Today marked a shift in the landscape and the gradients. I left behind the steep inclines of the High Peak District and entered the gentler contours of the Derbyshire Dales. With the sun breaking through the clouds at times, the countryside looked magnificent—fields stretching wide, and winding stone walls.
The majority of today’s walk was along the Tissington Trail, a 13-mile route that follows the path of the former Buxton to Ashbourne railway line. It attracts walkers, cyclists, and horse riders alike, nestled within the beautiful Peak District National Park. Compared to the last few days, the walking was easier, until the long incline up to tonight’s campsite at Bank Top lived up to its name and provided a sting in the tail just when I thought I was done for the day.
One of the most unexpected and intriguing sights on the trail was a dry stone walled shelter—a reproduction of an Istrian Kazun from Croatia. This curious little structure was a gift from Croatia in 2013, celebrating its accession to the European Union.
I reached Tissington Village in the afternoon, just ahead of its most famous event—Well Dressing. This year’s celebration runs from 29 May to 4 June, when the village’s six wells, including the prominent Town Well, are intricately decorated with natural materials in vibrant, artistic designs.
Tomorrow’s route will take me primarily along the Limestone Way, heading toward Uttoxeter. Another 15 miles are waiting—but for now, I’ll enjoy the quiet and the view from Bank Top.
