After yesterday’s finish on St Breock Downs, I picked up the trail again this morning under skies that couldn't quite make up their mind. The forecast hinted at rain, so I started off in full waterproofs. True to form, nature changed its mind—no rain in sight. The waterproofs were quickly stowed in the rucksack,
The first section of the route was a welcome downhill stretch, though it didn’t take long before the inevitable uphill slog made an appearance.on the other side the valley where I reached the village of St Wenn where I had my coffee break.
From there, I pushed on toward Tregoeta Down, where the day's navigation challenges really began. There was meant to be a footpath across the down, but from the roadside, it was nowhere to be seen. I backtracked and discovered another footpath sign, further along. Taking a chance, I followed it—and after some determined orienteering, I eventually linked back up with the original intended route.
Things were mostly straightforward until I hit another path that had become completely impassable. I opted for the pragmatic solution: a quick (and respectful) detour across a farmer’s field to rejoin it.
Lunch was enjoyed in a car park near an Owl Sanctuary—a peaceful spot, if a bit unusual—and then it was onward through the urban area of Indian Queens, which was quite a change from the countryside. Eventually, I made it to the village of Mitchell, before heading back out into rural scenery.
One final detour around a footpath section I decided to avoid, and before long I reached Rosehill, where Adam came to collect me and return us to the campsite for the evening.
Today had a bit of everything: tricky navigation, lovely weather, urban hustle, and rural charm.
Tomorrow promises more of the same—and about the same distance too.
